It is also possible to cut a key to a lock where no key exists.

The Ford Tibbe key on the left is very worn but it was still possible to cut the new key on the right by using the key's code.
This demonstrates the advantage of cutting a key to code, no matter how worn the original key is, a new key can be cut to the original specification.
